Fair point, but I suspect that 3 Amigos and Spies Like Us would be unbearable now.

New shows probably deserve 2 episodes - the pilot is usually burdened with the character introductions so it's hard to make a great 1st episode.

I agree with the 1 episode. You'll be able to see this show's future within 5 minutes. But I have a problem with you boxing him in to "Vacation, Caddyshack, and Fletch". Maybe they haven't stood the test of time well, but Spies Like Us was pretty good and The Three Amigos (while unbelievably juvenile) wasn't bad either when we were teenagers.

And besides, saying that someone ONLY made Vacation, Caddyshack, and Fletch is like saying the Patriots have ONLY won the Superbowl three times. Those movies are all first-ballot inductees in William J. LePetomane Memorial Wing of the Movie Hall of Fame.

Chevy has been in precisely 3 good movies in his entire career: Vacation, Fletch & Caddyshack. Also maybe that Neil Simon movie that I sort of remember.

In other words, he's terrible! Even the 'You Can Call Me Al' video is awful in retrospect.

I will watch "Community" out of respect for you - but he gets 1 episode and I'll need 10 laughs to set the DVR for episode 2.

On a similar note...

This new Chevy Chase comedy "Community" is getting great initial reviews. Now I kind of see this as a no-win for old Chevy. If it's good, he has to be absolutely great! Because of his previous works (albeit nothing more recent than the video for Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al"), his character has to become one of those that can absolutely make or break a show in order for people to regain respect for Chase. But what are the chances of him becoming the next Kramer, Homer, or Coach Pantuso? Slim and none! So that option is out.

If the show stinks, the last two Chevy Chase fans in the world (I'm talkin to you, Jo Don Baker and Michael O'Keefe) will dump him. And if the show is just okay, won't people keep asking "Why would a big name like Chevy Chase do a lousy show like this?"

This is all leading me to the conclusion that "Community" might just be the next "Cheers". Why else would he have taken the job? And why would NBC be promoting it so much? My only question now is will I be more disappointed if it's good and I don't get to see the much-anticipated Chevy Chase train wreck...again, or if it stinks and I somehow (deep down) wanted to see our beloved Ty Webb make a comeback on the Senior Tour.
